The Osteoporosis Numbers: Why Bone Health Matters Now

Key statistics from Dr. Loren Fishman, MD at Columbia University.

44 million Americans have low bone mass. That amounts to 55 percent of everyone over 50.

One in 2 women and one in 4 men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.

Osteoporosis is responsible for more than 1.5 million fractures annually, including 300,000 hip fractures just in the US.

Men over 50 are more likely to suffer from a hip fracture than prostate cancer.

500,000 people will be admitted to US hospitals with osteoporotic or osteopenic hip fractures by 2040.
